Regarding modems, I always liked the fact that external modems had lights. I eventually started using internal modems, but I always avoided software-based internal modems. I tended to like US Robotics internal modems, since they always seemed to offer a hardware-based internal modem. I don't remember having many problems with internal modems requiring a reboot.

I seem to remember seeing a few internal modems that had a front panel with modem lights that would fit into a 3.5" floppy drive bay, but those were few and far between.

I still have yet to see the new Star Wars movie, but I plan to see it at some point. I've heard generally good things about it so far, and that it's better than the prequel movies.

It wasn't often that an internal modem had a problem requiring a reboot, but it would happen from time to time. External modems too, but at least you could just turn them off and back on again without affecting the computer. Also the LEDs on the external modems could clue you into what the problem was or the severity (e.g. no lights usually meant the modem was dead or dying).

I seem to remember seeing a few internal modems that had a front panel with modem lights that would fit into a 3.5" floppy drive bay, but those were few and far between.

I've never seen one of those. Definitely a cool feature, but so few users would even know what the lights meant, it was kind of a geek-feature anyway. I use a USRobotics (Sportster) external modem for my BBS dial-up line today and often check the LEDs out of habit. Oh, and when I don't want it to pick up the line, I just turn it off. :-)

I still have yet to see the new Star Wars movie, but I plan to see it at some point. I've heard generally good things about it so far, and that it's better than the prequel movies.

Soon... soon. :-)

That's true, being able to easily turn it off is another benefit of an external modem. :)

It's absolutely more "Star Wars" than the prequels, and it's better than Episode I hands down. As for being better than the other two, a lot of the answer to that depends on how you define "better".

I used whatever I could get my hands on, as my dial-up BBS was made up of cast-offs. I started with Anchor 2400 Sportsmodems, after a company bought 50 of them for a dial-up WAN and tossed them shortly afterwards when they realized they needed error correction. I saved a handful of them from the garbage and gave them out with a copy of COMMO with my BBS number in the dialing directory.

Then, I had an old Telebit T3000, every once in a while I'd have a user with one of them connect and they'd make a really weird sound when they trained.

Then, an assortment of USR Sportsters as people upgraded -- first a 14.4 when the 28.8s came out, then a 28.8 when they went 56K.

I've got a cast off USR Courier V.Everything now, but no callers. :)
